Have you tried to gulp down a cup of coffee to spend a pleasant date with your crush? Or are you someone who would like to taste it just to see if it’s an acquired taste, as people say? Have you had business meetings over a cup of coffee? Or maybe you like your cup of tea more than coffee.
But why coffee?
Coffee may not tickle your tastebuds, and you may have your reasons. Well, you’re not alone.
But there is much more to coffee and here is why you may want to try it!
A Great Conversation Starter
Coffee is more than just a comfort drink. As one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, coffee is a go-to drink for many occasions, casual meetups, conferences, or dates. Some of the most significant conversations or ideas sparked over coffee, so why not try?
Beyond energy boost
Did you know that coffee is a power-packed beverage with many health benefits? Yes, you heard that right! You are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver and endometrial cancers, Parkinson’s disease, and depression. So you could live longer! Who wouldn’t want that?
Ignites your brain
You might have heard people say- ‘Oh, there’s nothing like a cup of coffee!’. For most people, it helps them get their day started. It uplifts their mood and helps put everything into action. Many studies have proven that coffee stimulates brain activity, thus improving cognitive function and concentration.
Now that you know why it may be a good idea to try coffee let’s see how you can start (or at least try) liking it.
Smell the roast
Have you ever tried smelling coffee beans or coffee grounds? If you haven’t, then try it. Doing this regularly will help activate your senses with the aroma, which is the first step towards knowing the coffee flavor before you even have a sip of coffee.
Temper the bitterness
If you are not a fan of the bitter taste of coffee, then you may want to add some cream or milk/milk substitutes to reduce it. If adding cream doesn’t do much, you can also add your choice of sweeteners to make a more flavored coffee.
Pick a coffee bite
Try a coffee dessert before you dive right into drinking coffee. Tasting a flavor in its dessert form will help in developing your coffee palate. Having a bite of Tiramisu or Coffee Gelato might help you to gradually like the flavor of coffee.
Use a Light or Blonde roast
Does the bitterness bother you a little too much? Then trying a light or Blonde Roast might be the right thing to get started. As compared to Dark Roasts, Blonde Roast is mellow, smoother, and softer in taste. Coffee made using a blonde roast is lighter and yields a fruity flavor when brewed the right way.
Try flavored coffee
As a coffee beginner, you may want to try flavored coffee that might help to get started on your coffee-tasting journey. You can buy coffee online that’s packed with different flavors- fruity flavors like an orange-infused coffee or a regional coffee variety like an Arabica coffee- to kick your taste buds in just a sip.
Add a pinch of salt
This might sound absurd, but yes, salt helps. Adding a pinch of salt to your coffee neutralizes the acidity and sourness of coffee. It also helps reduce the strong, bitter taste of coffee if that’s your reason to stay away from it.
Adding salt to coffee is not a recently adopted phenomenon. Fun fact- historically, Ethiopians added salt to their coffee instead of sugar in their coffee rituals.
Use fresh coffee beans
The original flavor of something comes through in its freshness. Making coffee with fresh coffee beans impacts the flavor of the coffee. The natural essence and flavor of coffee disappear as the beans stale, making the unpleasant bitter notes more pronounced.
Drink a Cappuccino or Latte
A Cappuccino or Latte is the best way to start drinking coffee. The addition of steamed or foamed milk puts the strong hints of coffee at bay, thus making it easier for you to understand the flavor first before you start taking stronger shots like Espresso.
Get Cold-brew coffee
You may want to experiment with cold brew coffee if you don’t fancy hot coffee. Cold brew is much more stable than hot coffee, i.e., it has comparatively lower acidity levels and is naturally sweet which has made it a number-one choice among coffee beginners.
And finally….
Did you know that coffee speeds up weight loss?
If this is not a reason to start drinking coffee, we don’t know what is! 😀
But jokes apart, it’s okay if you don’t like coffee. Don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s a process that has to happen naturally which again, will take time. Give yourself the time and patience to get into the process of liking it gradually and making your way to appreciating the flavor a bit more than you do right now. At the end of the day, each one has their way of trying new things and what matters the most is how you enjoy it.
Try these tips to kickstart your journey to start liking coffee the right way.
