Have you ever noticed that fashion trends are cyclical? One minute, the 80s are making a comeback, the next everyone is all of a sudden in Old Money Outfits. As you get older, it is interesting to see how certain fashion items that were fashionable when you were younger fall out of fashion but then make a comeback many years later. A fashion trend is simply a style, look, or particular item that becomes popular and gains momentum, but these will come and go over time in what is known as a fashion cycle.
The 30-Year Cycle
Typically, you will find that fashion cycles take around 20 or 30 years to complete. Essentially, this is enough time for a new generation to enter the fashion market and wear clothes that will be “vintage” to them. Sometimes, these trends can be ironic and “ugly”, but also there are styles and particular garments that become fashionable once again largely because they contrast what is popular at the time and will become a key part of the culture (again).
The 90s is Back
Currently, 90s fashion is having a resurgence which fits with the 20 to 30-year fashion cycle. For a long time, 90s fashion has been the butt of many jokes, but this is all part of how the cycle works. Many of the popular fashion styles of the 90s did not age well in the 00s and 10s, but now they are finding popularity once again as younger generations discover this style for the first time.
Wide-Leg Jeans
So, what are a few fashion trends that are making a comeback? After skinny jeans have been so popular for so long, it seems only natural that wide-leg jeans are making a comeback and an item that is proving to be popular. Of course, these are not 90s originals and can be traced back to the 60s (30 years before, of course).
Oversized Plaid Shirts
Oversized plaid shirts are another “ugly” 90s trend that is becoming popular once again. These shirts will bring back memories of the grunge era for many but they also fit in with the overshirt trend. Oversized plaid shirts could be highly practical in the colder months as an extra layer that can be worn as a jacket.
Dungarees & Other Items
People would not be seen dead wearing dungarees just a few years ago (unless at a fancy dress party), but they are a great example of the cyclical nature of fashion as they are once again becoming trendy. Dungarees paired with women’s tops is becoming a popular look and also one that can be practical. A few other fashion trends to rise once again include bucket hats, scrunchies, and platform boots.
The cyclical nature of fashion is fascinating to observe, especially when clothes that you remember being trendy complete the cycle and come back into the mainstream. Currently, 90s clothes that have been out of style and mocked for many years are finding their way back with the above items to add to your wardrobe (or dust off if you are old enough!).
