Have you noticed that the places where we spend a lot of time greatly affect our mood? Most often, such premises are offices, apartments, and houses. And their design largely shapes our own thoughts, feelings, and even behavior.
This concept has long been noticed by psychologists, and some architects have already adopted it. They learned to use room styles to achieve specific goals. For example, research has shown that spacious rooms with high wooden ceilings are conducive to inspiration and creativity, a romantic atmosphere, and unity with nature. Low ceilings help you better focus on a specific task, etc.
As well as architectural solutions, interior design and surroundings affect our well-being and the way we think.
Interior and Our Health
Returning home to a pleasant atmosphere should be associated with positive experiences. After all, they have a good effect on our well-being which means that the environment directly affects our health.
Although many people prefer using their favorite colors and shades for interior decoration, this alone is not enough. It is important to maintain balance and to choose a harmonious color scheme that will be associated with a pleasant environment for a long time.
Nature and Relaxation
Previously, it was believed that natural landscapes (meadows, beaches, forest parks) distract and prevent you from concentrating, which is especially important in office spaces. Bosses were reluctant to let their employees dream of the scenery rather than completing the assigned tasks.
But now we know the opposite is true. Natural scenery is associated with better performance and focus. However urban landscapes negatively affect concentration - they contribute to rapid fatigue, as they are associated with an increased rate of information processing. Remember how you feel when you are on a busy street - can you focus on one thing here? Few can boast of this.
This principle applies to home interior design as well. For example, the clutter of an apartment does not contribute to relaxation in any way.
If there are too many objects at home, each attracting attention, this affects our subconscious mind, not allowing the brain to rest. In such an atmosphere, you constantly feel tension.
It has long been proven that in nature a person “rests with his soul”, feeling peace. Therefore, any natural elements in your home are sources of peace. It is good if the windows of the apartment overlook the forest park or just the adjacent "green" area. But even if there is an urban landscape outside the window, you can put live plants on the windowsills - then the mood (for no apparent reason) will be better.
Choose "Safe" Furniture
The choice of furniture also affects our well-being. Interior items must bring joy. That is why many people prefer not to throw out old furniture, but to restore it - then pleasant memories (for example, from childhood) remain residents of an apartment or house for a long time.
But if you can't avoid buying new furniture, then you should choose those items that you really like. Even if you have to spend time looking for them. If every chair, shelf, or rack is selected with love, then just one glance at them will bring up thoughts of "how good it is at home ...".
There is one more rule about furniture - less sharp corners. It is no coincidence that we choose objects with soft, curved surfaces for our own home. After all, a subconsciously sharp corner or surface is associated with danger.
So take a look around your home space - perhaps just adding a little softness to get rid of anxiety.
Connection with Furniture and Light
Positive communication is very important for people. Communication with your loved ones and family is especially important. Place chairs and other seating places in the house opposite each other whenever possible. This creates an atmosphere conducive to conversation. And if the seats are placed side by side, and even "facing" the wall, then there will be much less communication.
Lighting also plays a big role in communicating at home with family or friends. It is better to have pleasant family gatherings at dinner under soft, diffused lighting. In this case, all the participants will feel "at ease". And with a sharp and bright point light, a relaxed conversation will not happen.
Also, pay attention to natural light in your apartment or house. Replacing it with an artificial one is a bad idea because no one likes living in a cave. Natural light promotes well-being and, as a result, excellent performance. That is why large windows are designed in schools and many office centers.
Color is Indispensable
Color therapy, although it belongs to alternative medicine, has proven itself for centuries. So why not use the accumulated knowledge for the benefit of your own well-being? Let's see how color can affect a person's condition.
- Yellow. It can help to activate the nervous system and improve vision. Soft, warm shades of yellow are practically non-tiring, unlike bright lemon.
- Red. This color can increase the feeling of anxiety. Subconsciously, it is the color of danger, prohibition. The shades of pink represent femininity, but they are not suitable for every interior as they can provoke a feeling of weakness.
- Green. Calm soft green can promote relaxation and reduce fatigue. Olive has a similar effect.
- Blue. This color can act like green but some people note that it slightly reduces performance.
- White. It is the color of purity and light. Usually, it is used as a complement to other shades in order to activate them.
- Black. As well as white, black can be used as an additional color. If you decorate the entire living space with it, your good mood may suffer.
We have covered the main elements that influence the mood in a room. But there are many parameters individual for each person, which is really countless. Therefore, when decorating your own home, always listen to your own intuition. It will tell you how to do it right.
