At the end of 2020, everyone was seemingly looking forward to 2021 and a renewed sense of hope. Well, coronavirus is showing no sign of disappearing any time soon despite numerous vaccine approvals, and as we approach one year of our lives being turned upside down, it’s fair to say that a lot of people are starting to feel the pinch.
We all know someone who is struggling or has struggled at some stage during the pandemic, and many of us, with our mended sense of compassion, have learned the value of small gestures of kindness and the effect they can have on someone’s mental well-being. If you’re looking for a way to cheer up a special friend in your life, you don’t need to send a grandiose designer leather bracelet, a sparking diamond necklace, or a wad of cash through the mail. Here are some small acts of kindness you can do to show your loved ones how much they mean to you – from afar.
Write Letters
After the invention of the telephone, writing letters went out of fashion; at least, until now. Getting a letter-writing set, spraying it with your signature scent, and curating a handwritten letter is one small, inexpensive gesture that definitely ranks highly on the kindness scale. You can use your letter to reminisce about the good times, conjure up future plans, or simply have a gossip. Whatever you choose to write about, the act of taking the time to do it by hand and post it will go a long way to showing someone you’re thinking of them.
Send Flowers
There are so many mental health benefits to having flowers in your home; they reduce stress, help you sleep, lower anxiety and put you in a better mood, so it makes sense that if someone you know is having a tough time, sending them a bunch of flowers could cheer them up. Figure out what their favorite flower is and see if you can get a bouquet with that flower in for an extra personal touch. Don’t forget to fill out the card with some reassuring words, too.
Virtual Movie Night
Blocking out time in your schedule no matter how busy you may be, and using it to watch your friend’s favorite film with them (virtually of course) is another great way of showing someone how much they mean to you.
Time is valuable, so giving it to someone else – even just for an hour or two – can mean the world, especially if they live alone. Best of all? It’s such a small gesture, that you’ll barely notice it, but to a friend who’s down, it could change their entire day and give them something to look forward to.
Send a Care Package
Does your friend like lengthy soaks in the tub? Maybe they love indulging in candy, or perhaps they’re most at ease with a candle burning. Whatever they’re into, you can weave it into a care package. Receiving an unexpected gift is always pleasant and is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face, especially if it’s full of thoughtful little trinkets that show someone is thinking of you and listens to what you say. You can make your own care package, or you can Japanese food subscription box from an independent retailer. Not only will this help out your friend, but it will help our small business owner and help you, too, because giving releases happy hormones!
These are just some of the small acts of kindness you can do to show a friend how much they mean to you. Do you know anyone who could benefit from one of these?
