You probably already know that I love islands in general when it comes to travel (maybe since I grew up on one!) The Isle of Wight, off the coast of the United Kingdom, is no exception. This lovely location requires a boat journey to get there so seems like the ideal vacation... without having to leave the UK!
This is a staycation paradise, with gorgeous beaches, excellent culinary places, and a lovely small ambiance... particularly when the sun shines. So, if you're searching for the ideal summer destination to soak up the finest of British culture, check out these top things to do on the Isle of Wight and get ready to be inspired!
1. Hike to the Needles
The Needles, the most famous location on the Isle of Wight, is first on my list of things to do on the Isle of Wight.
This spectacular natural structure, which I think is described as a series of stacks in geological terms, forms a magnificent leading line out into the turquoise seas and is visible from the mainland - I should know, I've seen them from the New Forest.
These magnificent giants stand out against the blue water because of their unique white limestone look and red and white markings... and create quite a show! You may enjoy a variety of excellent treks of various durations to get to The Needles, and I usually utilize AllTrails to select a route that meets my needs in terms of length and complexity.
2. Freshwater Bay
When it comes to Isle of Wight monuments of a more artificial kind, Yarmouth Castle is hard to beat when it comes to top things to do. This 16th-century stronghold was constructed by Henry VII and it's simple to see why he selected this location! An English Heritage treasure – free to visit if you're a member – this 16th-century fortification was built by Henry VII and it's easy to see why he chose this place!
This castle, which has famous views of The Solent (the body of water that divides the Isle of Wight from the mainland), was constructed as part of a chain of defenses to protect this portion of the nation from invading French troops.
This history-filled treasure is a must-see on your Isle of Wight itinerary if you want to take in the aquatic vistas, explore the castle, and have a picnic on the gorgeous grounds.
3. Stop by the Smoking Lobster for a bite to eat
Eating at the Smoking Lobster in Ventnor, the finest restaurant on the Isle of Wight (just look at the TripAdvisor ratings! ), is an essential must on your list of things to do on the Isle of Wight.
The ocean views and quiet charm of the restaurant's excellent location perfectly match the amazing service and superb cuisine. It is owned by friends of mine (but I swear I'm not prejudiced!). Don't miss out on this low-key dining experience with world-class food!
P.S. I'd book ahead of time, too, since this restaurant sells out quickly!
4. Visit Ventnor's Beach
And, while you're at Ventnor, don't miss out on the chance to relax on the beautiful beach - after all, what are islands for? This area's lovely orange-tinged sand is great for families as well as ocean swimming, and there are lots of spots to loiter and enjoy along the beachfront as well.
Just remember to bring your swimsuit and towel... After that, have a sundowner at the Spyglass bar (just on the lake)! On the Isle of Wight, there are additional excellent beaches at Sandown, Appley, Compton, and Shanklin, so if you have the time, go to one or all of them!
5. Stand-Up Paddleboard, Kayak, Surf, Sail, or Windsurf
But if sunbathing, swimming, and sandcastle-building aren't enough to lure you to the Isle of Wight beaches, there are plenty of watersports to keep you entertained. Stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing, sailing, and windsurfing, as well as fishing and even fossil searching, are all available at different locations throughout the island.
Overall, the Isle of Wight has a lot to offer whether you're searching for an active beach experience or if you're traveling with kids and need to keep them entertained... When the weather is nice, nothing beats going out in it.
6. Have a good time at the Isle of Wight Festival
And, while we're on the subject of wonderful weather, if the sun is shining, as it usually is in this area of the UK, attending the Isle of Wight's annual music festival is a must-do. This weekend, which is usually held in September, the island is crowded and the mood is electrifying.
This is a fantastic UK festival that you should go to at least once if you want to enjoy the feel-good vibes with a large group of people and let your hair down while seeing some amazing performers. Otherwise, if you don't want to spend your time on the Isle of Wight in a congested environment... Avoid it at all costs!
7. Take a Walk Around the Entire Island
Why not contemplate a big huge stomp while you're on the Isle of Wight for something more healthy, or maybe to balance off all that partying? And I'm not joking!
Yes, if you're up for a genuine challenge, you can walk around the whole Isle of Wight in one day. This 70-mile huge walk around the whole coastline route is another bucket list item of mine, best done during mid-summer so you have ample daylight.
Otherwise, it's nice to know that you can break up this massive walk into parts and take in the whole island at a more leisurely pace!
