Even if you're not a fan of manga, anime, or sushi, Japan is a destination to do at least once in your life. Japan does not have spectacular monuments like other Asian countries, but it is more a place where a thousand small things give you the impression of being on another planet.
Although life is expensive it is possible to travel on a budget 'average' and still enjoy Japanese culture provided to minimal attention.
The country is easily accessible, the food is excellent, and the Japanese are very friendly with strangers if you make the effort to approach them but before all this, you must figure out where to live in Japan.

Beppu

Beppu is a famous city in Japan for its onsen (about 3000). Some are too hot to swim but others are available with different properties; sand baths, mud and steam.
Kamikochi
If you want to see the Japanese Alps in all their glory, steering Kamikochi in central Honshu. The landscape along the Azusa-gawa River is one of the finest of Japan.
Nara and the Todai-ji temple

Even if there are no monuments in Japan as spectacular as the temples of Angkor Wat, the Nara Todai-Ji would still have you glued to its size. It is the largest wooden building in the world and contains a gigantic bronze Buddha.
Kyoto

If you must choose only one place to visit in Japan, go to Kyoto. You could spend a week as there is much to do and see (temples, palaces and gardens):
- The Arashiyama bamboo forest
- The Golden Pavilion and the Silver Pavilion
- The temple Kiyomizudera
- Cross Geishas in the Gion district, if you're lucky
- The Nishiki Market
The Jigokudani Park

Located near Nagano, you will observe closely the wild macaques in the process of bathing in onsen. A visit in winter.
Hiroshima Museum and Park Peace Memorial
If you could visit only one museum in Japan, go to Hiroshima.
Cemetery Mount Koya

Mount Koya (Koyasan or) is a sacred mountain in Japan. Spend the night in one of the many monasteries and explore the mysterious Okuno-in Cemetery and 200,000 tombstones.
Mount Fuji

A symbol of Japan. If you're brave, you can accompany with other hikers to the summit and see the sunrise.
The Island of Miyajima

Another reason to go to Hiroshima, as the island of Miyajima is right next door. This is one of the most photographed places in Japan with its red torii emerging from the sea.
