One of the first things that people ask when travelling to Delhi is that it is safe or not. This is not the case and let us get to the details
1. Take out all the negative stereotypes from your mind
A lot of people may have negative feelings about India which is not always the case. Though there could be a tinge of smog and the streets could be a bit dusty, as the area is dry. Millions of people have gone on to visit this place and they have given their nod of approval to the region.
When it comes to high crime rates, personally I would deny the advice of the locals. But all of them tends to take place in scheduled locations which could happen anytime. As a precautionary measure you need to be careful when you are stepping out at night.
2. Dress in a proper way
If you do not want trouble coming your way then it is better to dress properly when you are in Delhi. You need to be respectful of the traditions or cultures which require the women to cover their shoulders and legs when they step out. It is a safety measure for women and better not to show their skin to men. In addition, if you are not dressed in a proper manner, you will not be allowed to enter temples or mosques.
For guys it is not going to matter a lot, but still, it is better to avoid flashy dresses when you visit a temple or a mosque.
3. Take care of your belongings
It might sound to be a no brainer but it is a common feature for all the tourist guides. Bag snatching is a common feature and I was lucky not to be a victim of the same.
4. Pick up the word Nai and learn to use it
There are a lot of people who would be trying to selling you numerous items in Delhi. It may be photos to the ball point pens at the signals. You may say a no thank you as a tourist but it would be better if you pick up the local language.
Though English is one of the widely spoken languages in Delhi, the word Nai means no in Hindi. This is going to ward off the people and they may stop haggling. Near accommodation in crowne plaza mayurvihar you may come across lot of people approaching you and this word comes handy.
5. Pre- paid taxis are a must
I hate bargaining, but when you are in this part of the world it is a must. The taxis or autos are always going to charge you extra so it is better to have a map ready and calculate the fare before you hop on to them.
If you are leaving the front desk, ask the front desk what would be the cost to your destination. Always ask for a lesser price than that since the drivers may be related to the front desk personnel and they would be trying to help them. If the driver says no to the price, you may ask someone else. But there is a strong possibility that he may come back to you. Suppose you are not in favouring of bargaining you may opt for pre- paid taxis.
6. Take note of the fact if the driver recommends a place, they would be availing commission for it
There is a strong possibility that your cab driver may be pleasing and take you to a shop for his benefit. Yes, it is ok but be aware that a driver gets a commission when they bring a customer to the shop. Hence, I would say no sternly to some shops and if I had extra time, I would personally make it a point that I pay a visit to all the shops.
7. Do not be worried if people are looking to take selfies with you
When I read on the blog post of someone who is looking to take clicks I was confused and thought this would happen to women. But the good people would always seek your permission to take photos. Capturing those photos is not for any malicious intentions
8. Do not drink tap water when you are in Delhi
There is a myth surrounding that if you are in Delhi, you may fall sick. The worst part is that in most of the blog and travel posts this was the case. Yes, I would state the tap water in Delhi is contaminated and it would be better if you avoid it. But there is no reason for you to be in a region where the supply of water is on the lower side and you fall in the category of millions of people out there.
9. Try as much as Indian food possible
It is not a lie when I visited India I was lucky to try a lot of Indian food. Though I had no idea on how tasty it might emerge and one of the items in every menu was Lassi. It is going to eradicate the spice from your food and for all the sweet buds out there it is a taste to savour.
To sum up things before you visit Delhi it is better that you learn a little bit of the local language. The common terms like Hi or goodbye would do wonders when you are in Delhi. Most of the people speak English but knowing Hindi is going to hold you in good stead in Delhi.
