Let’s face it, not all of us love the idea of a costume party - meaning we’ll likely leave the planning till the last minute as we scramble for an excuse not to take part. Full-blown costumes can be pretty expensive, too, whether you go for store-bought or DIY designs. Luckily, we’ve got you covered with a variety of budget-friendly, low-effort costume ideas, inspired by your favorite TV show characters.
Schitt’s Creek: David & Alexis
This one is for the unenthusiastic couples. Schitt’s Creek has taken the world by storm, making these guys instantly recognisable. For David, a simple monochrome style with black-and-white stripes, geeky glasses and a quiff and you’re good to go. You’ve probably got everything you need already in your wardrobe too.
As for Alexis, the boho queen loves a dress that flows and a headband. Pair a white lace skater dress with some brown boots and you’ve got this style icon down to a T.
Big Bang Theory: Sheldon Cooper
After 12 seasons, we said goodbye to Big Bang Theory in 2019, but that doesn’t stop Sheldon Cooper being an absolute icon. And his style is incredibly easy to match for your next costume party.
Check out 8ball.co.uk and take your pick of geeky T-shirts and layer over a long-sleeve top. Add a pair of straight-cut pants and you fit the bill. Plus, if you find a T-shirt from your favorite TV show or film, you’ll bag yourself a new, everyday outfit at the same time. Win-win.
Tiger King:
After a year of lockdown, it would be wrong not to mention these two characters. Tiger King was the first viral Netflix show we all tucked into when the pandemic started. And now, a year on, we can still enjoy the wild feature with a few simple outfit choices.
For Carol, a leopard print, baggy dress. Not forgetting the hippie-style flower crown. As for Joe, you might need a little help for the mullet, but a cool animal print shirt – preferably silky – blue jeans and chunky boots and you’ve got yourself the Tiger King himself. Maybe add a cute tiger soft toy to really seal the deal.
Pulp Fiction: Mia Wallace & Vincent Vega
No costume party is complete without an appearance from John Travolta. Whether that’s as Danny from Grease, Edna from Hairspray or Vincent from Pulp. This is probably the easiest costume you can choose. Both people simply need a white shirt and black pants. Vincent, you’ll need the added leather jacket and – so you’re not mistake for Danny – a cowboy-style necktie. As for Mia, you’ll need a black short wig and red nail polish.
Once you start thinking about your favorite TV shows and films, it can be pretty easy to find a costume without breaking the bank. And if you really hate dressing up, most of these costumes can look like an everyday outfit – so, there’s no need to feel embarrassed.
