What you need to know before playing escape games

Escape games are games in which a group of anywhere from two to ten people are in a “locked” room and have to work together and solve puzzles to escape the room before the allotted time, usually 60 minutes, is up.

But escaping these rooms is not an easy feat. Most escape rooms are designed to be more about the experience than actually winning and “escaping.” All rooms have a difficulty level, ranging from easy to medium to hard. Most rooms, even the ones deemed easy, only have about a 40 percent win rate.

Here are some tips to help make the most of your escape game experience:

Be in the game. Sounds easy, right? But you have an hour in this fictional world that you’re trying to escape from. Make the most of your time. Try to leave all distractions at the door and get “lost” trying to escape the room.

Rely on your senses to help you explore the room. Listen, look and touch. Creativity and curiosity are the keys to solving most of these games. If something isn’t working, try something else. Think outside the box.

Communicate with your team members. These games are all about teamwork. They are too complicated for one person to try to figure out alone. Talk out your ideas. If you see what you think might be a clue, say something. Others may not have seen it.

And if the fun experience itself isn’t even to draw you in, here are some of the benefits of playing escape games:

They build up your cognitive skills. These games involve memory, being attentive, reasoning, and making decisions. They also involve a lot of problem-solving. These games are perfect exercises for your brain!

They are also good teamwork exercises. Escape games encourage and strengthen teamwork. Team members learn to communicate and collaborate to solve the puzzles and get out.

You learn to be more creative. These games rely on logic, but a certain level of creative thinking is needed to be successful.
