The term ‘contemporary interior design’ can make many people think of minimalism and cold colors, monochrome patterns, and a lack of personalization. In reality, contemporary design has evolved to become so much more than that. Modern contemporary design is simple, yes, but it is also comfortable and inviting. The aim is to celebrate the space, clean lines, and a variation of texture, not the items inside the space. This is why clutter and busy patterns are not typical of contemporary design.
This guide introduces some of the key building blocks of contemporary interior design to inspire your home decoration project.

Contemporary colors
While some use of bright and bold colors (for example, in fabrics, art, or accessories) is not uncommon, contemporary design usually uses a lot of monochrome and/or neutral colors.
Use of lines
One of the most important design features in contemporary design is the definition given to lines through blocks of bold color, geometric shapes, architectural features, windows, and ceilings. Combined with large areas of bare space between furniture and on walls, contemporary design gives features the space they need in order to stand out.
Exposed structural elements
Some examples of contemporary design will make use of structural elements such as exposed brickwork or pipes, and sometimes they might even be painted in a bold color to draw attention to them. This can be a low-cost way to add variation and points of interest to the room.
Simple but bold furniture
Contemporary furniture should be simple, uncurved, and plain in color. Swap fabrics with busy patterns, ruffles, tassels, or skirts for monochrome or neutral shades with clean lines. Natural fabrics such as silk, jute, linen, and cotton with brightly colored pillows or throws can be an effective way to bring color to the room without overwhelming it.
Smooth flooring
Again, don’t use busy patterns (although geometric patterns can be effective) when choosing flooring for a contemporary design. Floors should be smooth and simple and made from vinyl, wood, or tile. Some people may prefer to include a bit of carpeting to minimize sound and add warmth. Alternatively, a rug can be used to bring texture and color to the floor.
Lighting
While in other styles of interior design a lamp or ceiling light might become a feature, in contemporary design, recessed lighting such as cove lighting, spotlighting, and indirect light are much more effective. Spotlights can be used to highlight a particular piece of art, while recessed, or track lighting, can light up an entire wall. Simple chrome or plain-colored fittings often work best.
Art and sculptures
A few carefully selected pieces of art such as Samuel Ryde’s phonebooth photography displayed in metal, glossy, or wooden frames—or a sculpture on a pedestal or plinth—can bring the space to life and add personality. However, be wary of cluttering the space with too much art, as this can quickly spoil the contemporary aesthetic.
Textures and materials
Common textures and materials in contemporary design include clear or opaque glass, and stone or metal. This can make the space feel cold or clinical, which is why many people pair this with textured throws, rugs, and cushions in plain colors.
